MoniSwitch, the Easy-Switch!
Executive Summary: MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA allows the sharing of two VGA monitors between multiple computers. This opens up several possibilities:
- If you are using two separate machines with a seperate monitor for each you can easily upgrade to a dual monitor setup for both machines. Add MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA and a video card for each machine and enjoy the extra screen estate!
- If you are using a dual monitor setup already you can easily add further computers equipped with dual VGA ports to the setup. MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA enables you to take advantage of the dual monitor setup with up to 4 Macs or PCs.
- If you already use several computers with two monitors each you can of course consolidate the setup for those machines that can be conveniently operated with one set of keyboard, mouse and dual monitors.
MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA is ideal for systems administration, web design & testing and other tasks that routinely require one operator to use several computers with significant screen real estate.
Product History:
Several Dr. Bott customers have used two MoniSwitches to control their dual monitor setup. For these users the hassle of switching two MoniSwitch/USB manually was well worth the productive advantage gained from a dual monitor setup.
We decided we could do better than that and created MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA. The new model has the same great design our customers already appreciated in MoniSwitch USB, but with support for 2 monitors on each of up to four machines
Configurations: MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA is available in a single configuration that allows sharing of dual monitors, USB mouse and USB keyboard between up to 4 computers. Both video and USB ports are switched simultaneously.
Video Connections: MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA features standard video connectors to support HD-15 (VGA) PC standard multisync monitors. MoniSwitch does not limit the possible resolutions of a connected monitor in any way. The super premium video cables included with the MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA allow direct connection to HD15 (VGA) PC standard video ports that are used on most computers including Apple's Power Mac G3/4s and most PCs.
USB Connections: USB keyboards, mice, hubs and other peripherals are connected directly to the USB "A" I/O port built-in to the MoniSwitch/USB. MoniSwitch Pro DVI also includes standard USB A-B cables to connect to the USB "A" port built-in to the computer or provided by a USB-PCI or USB-CardBus card.
Cabling: MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA comes with all necessary video and USB cables (2 m, ca. 6 feet long). We have taken special care to choose the highest quality video cable available. Our cables do not degrade image quality in any way nor do they show characteristic shadows in the video image often seen with other cables. These cables are virtually lossless at the frequencies involved and will not further degrade visible image quality beyond what happens in the original cable.
The USB cables also are of excellent quality. Here too, we have taken special care to ensure that your USB devices will function exactly the same through the switch as they would when directly attached to your computer.
Space Saving: MoniSwitch Pro Dual VGA takes space saving to a whole new level. By allowing you to share two monitors, keyboard and mouse between all your computers you can literally reduce multiple desks of equipment to a single area.
Value: The MoniSwitch products allow you to leverage your monitor investment over multiple computers to get the most value out of your displays. When compared with purchasing multiple displays for each machine the MoniSwitch can save you a lot of money indeed!
Typical Uses: People have found many different uses for MoniSwitch. Some of the more common include those who are required to use both a Mac and PC.
Various MoniSwitch models have found their way into companies like Apple, Microsoft and Pixar including one built into Steve Job's desktop setup for MacWorld keynotes for the introduction of Mac OS X.
MoniSwitch reduces the risk of confusion and error that increases when using multiple keyboards, mice and monitors. Obviously, MoniSwitch will save space and will allow redeployment of existing equipment or will save the cost of new equipment in such environments.
Compatibility: MoniSwitch is compatible with any computer compatible with multisync monitors and has a USB port. Most commonly this will include newer Macintosh computers such as the G3s, G4s and Intel based PCs running any operating system that supports hot-swappable USB such as Windows 98/2000 and other, emerging operating systems. USB PCI cards can be used to incorporate computers that lack built-in USB ports.
Note: On the Macintosh, USB-PCI and USB-CardBus cards have two known limitations that may affect their use with MoniSwitch. a) It is not possible to power on the Mac through an attached USB keyboard and b) all USB keyboards are recognized as US layout, regardless of their real type. At this time there is no known way to work around the former problem but we have a workaround for MoniSwitch users affected by the latter issue.
