Dr. Bott gHEAD & gHEAD II

The search is over - a universal cure has been found: Headless Macs now regain full capacity with Dr. Bott's new gHEAD video adapter.

gHEAD II is for all modern graphics cards since ATI Radeon 7000 and nVidia GeForce 2MX, simulating the EDID that corresponds to a complete list of resolutions and refresh rates.ist für alle modernen Grafikkarten ab ATI Radeon 7000/7500, es simuliert eine EDID mit einer vollständigen Frequenzliste.

gHEAD is the original version for older graphics cards as they were customary in Power Macintosh G3/G4 up to 500 MHz and older machines.

  • Standard VGA (HD15) connectors - gHEAD simply goes between the video connector on the ATI card and the video cable on your monitor
  • No switches, no dials - no possibility for accidental misconfiguration
  • Unlocks all video resolutions - including those that are blocked for many 3rd party CRT monitors (see below what you have been missing!)
  • Great for getting new flat panel displays to work on your Mac! gHEAD will prevent the Mac from booting into a too high resolution that cannot be displayed by the flat panel display
  • Compatible with Mac OS, Mac OS X, SuSE Linux PPC and all other OS for Powermac G3, G4 and G5.

gHEAD - the multipurpose VGA-Adapter

(Click on image compares gHEAD and gHEAD II resolutions side by side)
Summary: gHEAD is a VGA-VGA adapter that unlocks all video resolutions and refresh rates.

In addition gHEAD eliminates the dreaded "Headless Mac" problem that is feared among administrators of web servers, switchbox users and Remote Control aficionados alike.

Technicians love to keep a gHEAD handy when installing new LC-Displays - it saves a lot of hassle when the Mac would otherwise create a catch-22 by booting into a resolution too high to be displayed by the new flat panel.

Product History: gHEAD started out as a solution to cure the "Headless Mac" syndrome feared by Mac admins and webmasters worldwide.

A Mac whose monitor is not switched on (or connected) at boot time will start up properly - with the exception of video.

The Mac simply cuts off the entire video signal as a protection. This makes it impossible to control the Mac GUI locally or remotely with Remote Control software.

You will fully appreciate gHEAD when you need to do some important changes to your co-located web server many miles away only to find Timbuktu connecting but delivering a blank window since there is no active video card!

gHEAD works by simulating a connected monitor. The Mac believes there is a monitor attached and will properly build its video signal both on the graphics card and internally for utilities like Timbuktu. Voilà - your Mac no longer is headless!

More functions: During development we happened to come across a few more useful applications for gHEAD, which were duly taken care of, too:

Third party CRT monitors (i.e. non-Apple monitors) often do not display the full list of available resolutions and refresh rates. Usually the higher (and less eye-straining) refresh rates are locked out and sometimes some useful resolutions, too.

Simply check the list of your available resolutions agains the full list pictured above to see what you are missing without gHEAD!

Another use for gHEAD comes up when new flat panel displays are being installed. These generally cannot display refresh rates higher than 75 Hz. Often, the Powermac will boot into 85 Hz. This cannot be displayed by the flat panel and it will stay dark. This is a nasty because without a picture on screen you will be in a pinch to change the resolution to a lower value that can be displayed by your shiny new flat panel.

While you could use a seperate CRT monitor to resolve the issue most technicians will prefer to have a gHEAD around. Insert gHEAD between video board and the flat panels video cable, restart and change the resolution to what is needed (usually the native resolution is the best display mode for flat panels)!

Comaptibility: gHEAD is compatible with MoniSwitch KVM switches. KVM switches can produce the "Headless Mac" problem if the operator powers up a Mac while the KVM switch is set to connect another computer with the monitor. Most of the time this kind of situation occurs when the Mac is set to restart automatically either periodically or when a crash occurs.

gHEAD & gHEAD II both work with all VGA displays, the correct gHEAD model is determined only by the graphics card in use.

gHEAD works with ATI Graphics cards that ship with Apple Powermac G3 (blue-and-white) and Apple Powermac G4 (VGA-only, AGP DVI+VGA and ADC cards) up to 500 MHz.

gHEAD II is for all later graphics cards that correctly read EDID-Data. ATI Radeon 7000, nVidia GeForce 2MX and all later cards are in this group.

gHEAD is universally compatible with all operating systems that run on G3/G4 Powermacs. This includes Mac OS, Mac OS X, SuSE Linux PPC and other PPC-Linux variants.
